Swanson on Swanson
I am reading the autobiography of Gloria Swanson. She was the biggest movie star in the country, if not the world, during the silent movie era. She made the transition to sound films and had a huge comeback role in “Sunset Boulevard”.
I am at the point in the book where the year is 1925 and Gloria is making $15,000 a week. She has purchased the Hollywood mansion that was built by King Gillette, who invented the safety razor. It is right across the street from the Beverly Hills Hotel. Gloria is then offered the first every studio contract for over $1 million dollars a year. She has been in moving pictures for a decade, and is 26 years old.
