A Bird’s Eye View #520 – 15th November, 2017

Greetings one and all. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin… First, I must point out that almost everything below is true, probably around 99%. However, the whole truth is withheld because, as a wise Valley man known as Deekin’ once said, “If I told you the whole truth then you’d be as smart as me”… I like your thinkin,’ Deekin’…
Let’s start this week with another in our series, ’This Trump Thing,’ or as it had been known previously for nearly 250 years up until now – The U.S. Presidency… The US is set to become isolated in its stance on the Paris climate agreement, after reports that Syria is preparing to join the deal. The Paris deal unites the world’s nations in tackling climate change and Syria and Nicaragua were the only nations outside the deal when it was agreed in 2015. Nicaragua signed in October. In June the US said it would withdraw, but the rules of the agreement state that this cannot be done until 2020. Meanwhile, French officials said US President* Donald Trump had not been invited to December’s climate summit in Paris… I see – so Trump and his cronies believe the US is right and the rest of the world is wrong… It is this kind of narrow and shortsighted politicking and posturing that Trump is so fond of. Unfortunately many folks still agree with him. And there are few in the Republican Party and even less of those in his inner circle who have the gumption to stand up to him. It is sad to see so many folks in power who are so busy with serving themselves. When referring to such people, it would appear that the slogan should be ‘Make Americans Great Again”…

Let’s move on to the Turkey Vulture’s update on ‘Evening Dining in the Valley’… Just Downtown Boonville this week… In geographical order on Highway 128… Lauren’s Restaurant sees Libby (of Libby’s Restaurant in Philo fame) as the Guest Chef on Monday evenings from 5-9pm, while their regular hours remain Thursday-Sunday, 11.30am-2.30pm for lunch, and dinner on Tuesday-Saturday, 5-9pm… Lizbby’s, the Mexican Restaurant in downtown Boonville, can be enjoyed Monday to Saturday from 10am-9pm, serving breakfast on Saturday, closed on Sunday… The Buckhorn Pub has announced their winter hours: Monday and Wednesday: 4pm open, 11pm bar; Thursday: 11am open, 11pm bar; Friday: 11am open, midnight bar; Saturday: 10am open, midnight bar; Sunday: 10am open, 11pm bar; Kitchen open until 9pm every night; Brunch at weekends 10am-3pm; closed Tuesdays… The Boonville Hotel is no longer open on Monday evenings but continues with their family-style, prix fixe menu on Thursday thru’ Sunday evenings. They cook by reservation so call (707)-895-2210… The Q and Aquarelle, aka Aquarelle Cafe and Wine Bar, continue their ‘Santa Maria BBQ’ menu, featuring ribs and chicken, added to many of their previous favorites, and are open from 4-8pm, Friday thru’ Sunday… The Redwood Drive-In just keeps on doing what they do, with reliable hours that everyone can remember and rely on – 6am-8pm every day! And don’t forget to try the donuts… And that’s it for now – next week I’ll have the rest of the Valley’s dining venues… Until then, remember that ‘eating out is fun’…

Public Service Announcements (P.S.A.’s)… Calendars and pens at the ready… #543 – The AV Fire and Ambulance Department will be holding their Open House this coming Saturday, November 18, from 11am-4pm. Lots of stuff to see and enjoy. There will be complimentary burgers served until they run out and free burn permits available, not to mention a Bouncy Castle… #544 – The Vets from the Mendocino Animal Hospital have one more visit to the Valley this month. That is tomorrow, Thursday, November 16 from 2-4pm. To avoid a line perhaps turn up at around 3pm – you will definitely be seen. They have one visit next month, the final one of 2017, and that is scheduled for Thursday, December 14. New customers and their pets are always welcome and previous visitors should be aware that they can call 462-8833 and the vets will bring your pet’s charts with them – making this an even better service than it already is!… #545 – This Saturday, June 24, sees the next Pop-Up ‘Open Mic’ night at Lauren’s Restaurant in Boonville. Dinner served 5 to 9 before the Open Mic starts at 9 pm. All are welcome – musicians, singers, poets, writers, impressionists, magicians, comedians, exotic dancers, animal callers, etc. No clowns – apparently they would scare any kids who might be there, and no mimes, please – they scare almost everyone else! For more information call 895-3869… #546 – The Anderson Valley Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm. Situated in The Little Red Schoolhouse next to the Elementary School on A.V. Way, visiting the Museum is a perfect thing to do in the Valley when you have a couple of hours to spare on a weekend afternoon. It is not without reason that it is generally regarded as ‘The Best Little Museum in the West’… #546 – The A.V. Lending Library takes place at The Fairgrounds and is run by The Unity Club. They are open Tuesday 1.30-4.30pm and Saturday 2-4pm…
As a bonus P.S.A. here is the menu for the Community lunches and dinners over the next week in the Senior Center at the Veterans’ Building in Boonville. The Center asks for a $6 donation from seniors for both lunches and dinners and charges $7 for Non-seniors for lunches and $8 for the dinners… Tomorrow, Thursday, November 16, the lunch, served by Marti Titus and her crew at Noon, will be Smothered Steak / Holy Cow Cake… Then, next Tuesday, November 21, the lunch will feature Citrus Cod / Cranberry-Orange Pound Cake for dessert. All meals include vegetables, salad bar, and fruit, plus milk, coffee, tea, and lemonade. What a deal – it maybe the best value for money you’ll get all week! Next Thursday, November 23, the Senior Center will be closed for Thanksgiving… Remember – ALL ages are welcome! Hope to see you there…

Moving quickly on to a few of the topics and Valley events under discussion this week at The Three-Dot Lounge – yes it’s “Moans, Groans, Good Thoughts, and Rampant (yet surprisingly reliable) Rumors” from my favorite gathering place in the Valley, a somewhat secret location that sees people get together and share their thoughts about life in Anderson Valley and often far beyond…
… My ration of successfully coming up to a green light as opposed to a red one at the traffic stop on Highway 253 is 2-of-77 at this point… Can I assume others are doing any better?… The good news is that the CalTran workers don’t seem to scowl at us menacingly like they used to… I almost miss it…
… Great turnout of 102 people for the Veterans Day of Remembrance held last Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery… Even some dignitaries made it from over the hill – District Attorney C. David Eyster and Supervisor Dan Hamburg. It was much appreciated I’m sure – and it is not even an election year for them!… (Half joking)…
… Why was the Elementary School closed on Monday? Yes, yet another day off… Skeptics who remember the knee-jerk closures last spring due to some inclement rain and wind will be relieved to know it was not due to the rainfall this week. A little bird told me that it was in fact a water issue of a different kind. Apparently, in a move that was long overdue, the head water guy was ‘let go’ a few weeks ago. Has his replacement been hired in this period of time? If not, why not? Is this actually rocket science?… I think we should be told…

Oh, dear, have I upset somebody? “Whatevs” as the younger crowd might say… I’m outta here – I’ve got see a man about a sheep… So, until we talk again – be careful out there; if you break a leg don’t come running to me; stay out of the ditches; be wary of strangers with more dogs than teeth; show love to your pets, they will be faithful and true to you to the last beat of their hearts; think good thoughts; ‘Keep the Faith’; try to not let life get in the way of living; may your god go with you, and may your dog go with you too… Oh, and of course, one final request, “Let us prey”… Sometimes poking, often stroking, and almost always humbly yours, Turkey Vulture…

p.p.s. On the sheep, Grace… Keep on humming, Hummingbird…
Missing the Venerable Pheasant…
