Der Blaue Engel
When I was in film school, the famous director Josef von Sternberg came to our class and showed us his personal print of his film, “The Blue Angel” (Der Blaue Engel). He was very elegantly dressed. Just before the lights went down, to start the picture, Mr. Sternberg half rose and looked back at us. “This print is in German”, he said, “But I will shout out anything you need to know.”
He didn’t need to do much shouting. The film stars Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings. I remember a stage number with Marlene starting out in a full-body gorilla suit. When she takes the head off, revealing her head atop the giant ape suit…
Well, you had to be there. However, I highly recommend you order it on Netflicks.
I am showing these pictures of a different kind of Blue Angel to remind myself to get a new camera.
